Duke of York Square Food Market (+pasta recipe)

The Duke of York Square Food Market is located next to Saatchi Gallery close to Sloane Square tube station. Every Saturday the market sells everything from good quality cheeses and cupcakes to Malaysian cuisine and Moroccan food.

Originally the market was started by the upmarket food shop Partridges back in 2005. The aim was to give small producers and family businesses the chance to trade their goods in this expensive part of Chelsea.

Portobello Market in Notting Hill

London’s Portobello Market is one of the most famous street markets in the world. Located on the Portobello Street itself, it is the vibrant hub of Notting Hill.

Portobello market has a long history and began as a fresh-food market in the 19th century. The shops are lining along the whole street and it’s the charm of the colorful Victorian townhouses that turns the Portobello Road into a special vintage shopping experience.

Brick Lane Market & Boxpark in Shoreditch

Today we visited the Brick Lane Market in Shoreditch. It’s a typical Sunday flea-market with a range of vintage clothes, furniture, music and other goods. The market takes place from 8am to 2pm every Sunday and the nearest tube station is Aldgate East.

The market spreads along the Brick Lane and spills out onto the side streets. Actually, we were very disappointed today. We rather found a lot of junk and anything for sale than unique vintage pieces for our closet. The streets are also quite dirty and I really missed the typical London market atmosphere. If you’re looking for special vintage bargains I’d rather recommend you to visit the Camden Market or the Portobello Road in Notting Hill.

We decided to leave the market and to visit Boxpark, the first pop-up mall in the heart of East London. The concept is easy and unique: Shipping containers are refitted to low-cost ‘box-shops’, including international fashion and lifestyle brands, cafes and galleries. The Popup Mall will only stay in Shoreditch for five years. Afterwards it will literally ‘pop up’ anywhere else in the world. A great idea and definitely worth visiting, if you want to explore one of London’s upcoming areas. Boxpark is located directly next to Shoreditch High Street Overground Station.

Here are a few impressions of our day in Shoreditch. Continue reading
